Fall is finally here! So, let's review a few things to remember this month when maintaining your lawn.
Landscaping
Now is a great time to focus on those landscaping projects you've been thinking about all year. We are currently coming out of peak growing season and there is less maintenance to do on the lawn. This makes fall and winter a great time to install new landscaping projects for the upcoming spring season.
Why Should My Landscaping Projects Be Done In The Fall & Winter?
While many plants go dormant in the winter, their root system still grows. Many people enjoy laying sod and planting new shrubs during this time of year because they do not have to water as much and have a mostly established yard by the spring.
Most shrubs and tree limbs should get a fall or winter cutback during this time. This will help the plant grow more efficiently and help with the overall health of the plant. If you live near a woody area, this would also be a good time to get a wood area clean up if you haven't already.
Other landscaping projects like, installing bedding edging, retaining walls, and french drains are all preferred to be installed before the spring and the rainy weather that comes with it.

Leaf Clean-Up
It's that time of year again when we see the leaves begin to fall and change colors. While we all enjoy the weather this time of year, what we don't love is the leaves that pile up on our lawn.
Why Are Leaf Clean-Ups Important For Your Lawn?
Well, there is a curb appeal to having a clean yard, but leaf clean-ups are more important than the nice appearance. Leaf buildup on the lawn smothers the grass and blocks sunlight and nutrients for the plant which can stunt growth and cause brown patches. Also, the build-up of leaves suffocates the lawn and traps in moisture causing fungus and mold growth. During the fall and winter, you may not see the damage caused by leaf buildup on the lawn, however, by the spring you will notice inhibited growth
When Should I Clean The Leaves Off My Lawn?
With most lawns here in Georgia you'll need at least three leaf clean-ups during this time of year. A good rule of thumb is to have a leaf clean-up around each holiday. Around Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are typically the best time to have your leaves cleaned up off the lawn.

Treating The Lawn
Treating the lawn for weeds, fungus, and insects is the best way to keep your lawn healthy and looking pristine. Let's go over a few things to prioritize during this upcoming month.
Fertilization & Weed Control
Treating the lawn is one of the best and easiest ways to help keep your lawn looking nice and staying healthy. By controlling the weeds, you eliminate the risk of weeds spreading and overtaking the lawn. Fertilizing the lawn will help grow full and stronger grass.
How Should My Weeds Be Treated This Month?
Treating Warm Season Grasses Throughout October: If you have Bermuda, Zoysia, or Centipede, your current treatment should include a winter fertilizer. This fertilizer will help your lawn survive during the winter months and help the grass grow better for the spring. After a hard freeze, it may cause the grass to come out of dormancy later than expected. However, a winter fertilizer will help with this issue.
Insect Control
Late summer is prime time for bugs however, some major damaging insects stay active through early fall. When temperatures reach above or well above 70 degrees, insects begin to reproduce at a much higher rate causing infestations. After the heat of the summer when temperatures cool down to around 70 degrees, insects reach their full strength.
Damaging Outdoor Insects To Look Out For This Month:
Ticks & Fleas- In Georgia, the fall season is prime time for fleas and ticks. While these two insects do not cause much damage to the lawn, they can hurt your loved ones.
Armyworms - These insects usually come out during late summer to early fall. These worm-like larvae stay true to their name as they travel side by side while eating and destroying the lawn. Armyworms eventually become months, however, they will very quickly damage the lawn by eating the grass while in their larva stage. They eat the grass blade from the top down causing the grass to become brown and thin. These insects are ones you will want to get rid of as soon as you notice them. Signs of armyworms in the lawn include browning of the lawn and or white months in the lawn.

Bi-Weekly Mowing
How Should My Lawn Be Mowed This Month?
In Georgia most grass types go dormant in late fall, so typically most mowing services will continue until the end of October. Even though October is usually the end of the mowing season, it is still an important month to continue mowing. By the end of October, all warm-season grasses need to be cut down to 2 inches. This height will help keep the grass healthy during the winter months. If the grass is kept too tall, the grass can mat and cause browning and inhabit a variety of funguses. This damage will be more apparent during the beginning of the spring season when the grass starts to come out of dormancey. However, if the grass is cut too short it can cause frost damage during a hard freeze.
